Can i upgrade graphics to 256 mb graphics ram + pixel shaders to my 3 yrs old system?

Hey ppl i wanted to know if i can upgrade my graphics to 256 mb graphics ram .

I have

P-4 processer

512 MB RAM

2.0 GHz mercury motherboard.

And 64 mb graphics ram.

I asked my computer vendor but he said that your computer does not possess a AGP graphics port. I beleived him until i saw that in my comp. bios there are two graphics option PCI or AGP that means my computer does have a additional graphics port.

but I'm still not sure and need ur help . And i also wanna kno which is the best graphics adapter i can buy. And where to attach it.

Hey Rahul...

Good to know that u r interested in upgrading your system. In my opinion get a (NVIDIA 7600GT PCI-E 256 MB), this works on PCI Express which is far better than AGP, it works wonders for your gaming experience. This would go to your PCI express slot on your MBD. In case you do not have a PCI express slot, then you can buy a new PCI Express expansion card and install it on your PCI (white colored) slot and then get this demon installed. But, I would suggest a new MBD, if you are looking for some serious gaming, get an AMD/ASUS MBD, rather than an INTEL one which would be cost effective and better performance. Let me know in case you need any further info

I guess you dont have a AGP Slot. If you dont then Go for a PCI Graphics Card Like the 256MB geforce 6200...

That option on BIOS maybe just for choosing the built-in or the PCI G Card.

The vendor is right. Ask him to instal AGP in your computer. What you saw is the icon only, icon for AGP or CGP.

Accelerated Graphics Port is a dedicated port that links the graphics controller on a personal computer directly to the computer's memory, instead of data having to be fetched via the expansion bus. AGP can handle at least twice the throughput of a standard PCI bus. The AGP was developed by Intel, and AGP support was added to later versions of Microsoft Windows 95. The hardware to support these graphics is called a graphics card. The way this card connects to your computer is key in your computer's ability to render graphics

fyi PCI and PCI Express are different. AGP is better than PCI, while PCI Express is better than AGP.

Ok, if you want to know if you have an AGP port open the side of the case. There is going to be a bunch of slots on the lower left like you already know. If the top slot different and set back slighty, then you have an agp. Here is a picture of one:

Even if you dont have one, you can upgrade the motherboard and fix the whole problem. Its less than $50 for a socket 478 motherboard with an agp, and any new 478 board is going to be light years ahead of what you have.

If I was you, I would just build a newer rig, it would not be nearly as much as you think.

To get a Amd 64 3500, socket 939 motherboard, 1gb ram, and a 8500gt graphics card would be $210. That setup would be several times as powerful as your current system.

If you want, you could add on a larger SATA 2 HDD, which would make your computer significantly faster.

Whatever you decide, good luck.
