A game can lag do to a lower end processor. If you have a dual-core you should be alright. Your memory/RAM is a big part as well. If you are running vista as your OS than I would upgrade to atleast 4 Gb of memory. In a graphics card your looking for 256mb or higher with the newer gddr3 memory. The fastest would be pci express x16 not agp x8.

The difference between ATI and nVidia is debatable. Some prefer ATI while some prefer nvidia. I personally choose nVidia. Yes there is a lot more than just the video card that would make a game lag. Pretty much every component in you tower is responsible everything must work in unison. This includes the sound card, memory, CPU, the psu, the hd. If your going to upgrade a little at a time I would start with the CPU the low end core2 (as long as the mobo will take it) would be a good choice. That part is more than likely going to be the most expensive. If your going to start from the ground up because all of us game junkies do. Make sure you get or have a motherboard that has pci-express. SLI capability is even better because later you can install a second video card. NVIDIA is better!
