Does the graphics accelerator card enhance my current graphics card?

Does the graphics card accelerator card plug into my existing graphics card or replace ot all together? Will a graphics card accelerator make photos I have scanned in load faster in my photoshop (Adobe Photoshop Elements 3)? What would be the best way to get this to happen? My computer has s ton of hard disk space (+100 GIG) a 1 GIG of RAM and currently has an "INVIDIA 5500" graphics card.

graphics accelerator card is only another name for graphics card. The graphics card does only the output to the computer monitor and it will NOT load your photos faster in photoshop. This is the job of the CPU (Central Processing Unit: Intel Pentium, AMD Athlon etc.).

The best way to get this happen is to get a new computer. Another suggestion is to get a new motherboard and a new CPU, but then you have to take care of the compatibility of the RAM and the graphics card.
