I am looking into getting a new graphics card for my Acer Aspire 5050 laptop which currently has ATI Radeon庐 Xpress 1100 integrated 3D graphics, with up to 128 MB of shared system memory. I was just wondering what I need to look at in order to determine which graphics card could be compatible with my computer.

you cannot install a video card into your laptop without 1) voiding the warranty, 2) disassembling your entire notebook 3) risk breaking your laptop and last but not least, 4) finding drivers
4 will be the hardest. you risk your screen not even working.
additionally, you will have a very hard time finding a card that's being sold
