I have heard that you can have graphics on a computer without an actual graphics card. Is this possible? If so, how is it achieved? I have heard that when you buy them from some small locally owned businesses, they use a process called Ghosting and they do not actually put video or sound cards in the computer, but you still have the capabilities. How does this work?

I'm a computer technician who builds computers. A computer does not need a graphics card, but if it doesn't have a graphics card, it must have graphics functions built into the motherboard/mainboard. The mainboard is the large circuit board in every computer that everything plugs into.

Some motherboards have graphics and sound functions built in. Therefore the company that uses this type of motherboard to build a computer does not need to add a sound card or graphics card.

I built and am using a computer like this myself as my main computer.

Ghosting software has nothing to do with graphics. It has to do with copying data from one computer to another.

What did cuite say???? Anyway what you are talking about is integrted graphics. Basically instead of having a dedicated processor and memory on the graphics card, the system just uses the main processor and the main system memory for graphics purposes. The problem is that this process puts an extra strain on your processor and RAM and reduces overall system performance, plus you cannot do anything that is really graphics intensive, like games for example. The basic same system is used with integrated sound, with the same drawbacks, although the drawbacks of integrated sound are not nearly as severe as those of integrated video. Integreated graphics and sound are good for people who are concerned with cost, and are not looking to achieve high performanc, such as people who only use their computer for internet and email or word processing.

Sweetie whoever told you that needs to be checked into the hospital. For computers, ghosting means making an identical copy (or ghost image), of a computer's hard disk drive using backup software. A computer to run always needs a graphics card.
